American Dream. This chapter shows the importance of money. Gatsby parades Daisy around his house and shows her his hundreds of expensive beautiful shirts. She couldn’t marry him because he had nothing before but he wants to prove that he is worthy now. He has accomplished a lot since she last saw him and he makes sure to get that across.
Character Development: we really see how much Gatsby loves Daisy in this chapter. “You’re acting like a little boy” This shows that Gatsby is so nervous he can’t even function properly.
Colors: “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.” Green signifies go and take action.
american dream- “WIld rumors were circulating about her – how her mother had found her packing her bag one winter night to go to New York and sa goodbye to the soldier who was going overseas. She was effectually prevented, but she wasn’t on speaking terms with her family for several weeks. ” This shows that the American dream for parents isn’t for their daughter to go off and marry some poor soldier but to marry a rich man who can get out of going to war.
Character development: In this chapter we see that Gatsby is a nice guy who cares about other people. He doesn’t want to upset anyone and is very loving but it also seemed like he was hiding something big.
colors- “she dressed in white and had a little white roadster” I think they are showing how pure Daisy was. and how she stood out from the rest of the girls.
American dream: In this chapeter Gatsby is throwing one of his huge parties, and while they are going through his house it discribes all the magnificant stuff he has. It shows that the American dream is to be rich and to have cool expensive things you can show off to your friends.
Character development: Jordan Baker’s charater develops into an independant party girl in this chapter. She goes to Gatsby’s parties all the time but knows how to handle herself. For example, “Jordan Baker instinctively acoided clever shrewd men and now I saw that this was because she felt safer on a plane where and divergence from a code would be throught impossible.” It also said she was a very dishonest woman.
Colors- There are a bunch of different colors at the party and I think they are used to show the different moods and personalities in the party throughout the night.
American Dream- “You can’t live forever; you can’t live forever.’’ This shows you just have to live life to the fullest, always do what you want when you want to do it. There is also a lot more about how the American Dream is being rich. Mrs. McKee says, “I almost made a mistake, too,” she declared vigorously. “I almost married a little kyke who’d been after me for years. I knew he was below me. Everybody kept saying to me: ‘Lucille, that man’s ‘way below you!’ But if I hadn’t met Chester, he’d of got me sure.” This shows that people are more after money than love they will do anything to be rich.
Character Development -“Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.” In chapter one there was a description of Tom that described him as being a fierce tough cold man, this quote just shows how mean he really is. He doesn’t care who he hurts he will do whatever it takes to get what he wants.
Colors- There are a lot of dark colors in this chapter for example, ash gray and plain gray are mentioned a lot in the first paragraph. I think it’s a way to set the tone of personality for the chapter. Sort of dark and sneaky and mean.
The role of the American dream- The quote: “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” This shows that part of the American dream is having an education and money. If you have those two things you will be set for life, if not you are set up for a life of constant criticism and failure.
Character development- In this chapter we see Nick starting to make a living of his own and by his reactions it sounds like he is very surprised to hear of the unfaithfulness of Tom and is starting to realize that the world is very far from perfect.
Color symbolism- The colors white and red appear a lot. I think when the color white is used it’s referring to a pure kind and nice human being, when he uses red he is often talking about characteristics of Tom’s house or personality so I think it’s used as a harsh vulgar side of a person.
Yes/No
I agree with Lewis Thomas about cloning human beings i don’t think it should be done.
- In order to make the clone the same as the other person you would have to clone all of their friends and family, but to recreate all of that person’s friends and family to be the same you would have to recreate all of their friends and family as well. You would basically have to clone the whole world in order to make people the same.
- People are not supposed to scientifically recreate people. Like my dad says “they are trying to play God”
- Everyone would be the same there would be nothing new to come out of the new people because it would be the same as the people before them.
But
- If people had a clone they would never have to search for a donor if they had poor health. and it would help cure a lot of diseases.
- If it was someone really smart they could keep discovering and creating new things after the first person died.
