JFK’s inaugural address was very dramatic and well worded but pretty short. I noticed he refers to God a lot which shows he is very religious which to some people may be scary and to others comforting. He mentions helping other countries that are not as fortunate as us not because we want to out-do the communists but just because it’s right which shows he is looking to not only better the US but the entire world. This mention of communists then leads into a large part about the cold war. He is very good at making it sound like he will keep the US safe from nuclear war although he has no guarantees. Overall I think the point of his speech was to make the American citizens more comfortable with their situation with Russia and to make them trust him right away by promising to protect them.

David Foster Wallace’s article Just Asking was written with very harsh facts and statistics to get the reader to really think about terrorism and what that have to go through to have freedom in return. Wallace has no personal opinion statements in his article, its all in question form so you are able to ask yourself the questions and get down to what you truly think. The article has a slightly depressing tone to it, and Wallace uses very powerful words like monstrous repeatedly to emphasize the horrible atrocities that happen which are just as bad, if not worse than 9/11 we just don’t look at it in that way because not everyone dies at once. The real question is what are we willing to pay to get the American idea in return, and if you go through the essay and answer all the questions you will come out with you point of view on the subject.
The first article was written to inform people that the princess had died. Since the writer is not a friend or family member of Diana they are writing strictly to inform and don’t really add any emotion into the article. At the very end they mention the mourners but that is the only sign of emotion shown.
Queen Elizabeth’s televised speech was much more personal. She was sharing her grief with the world but also saying what she felt would help them get through the terrible event. She did a good job at including her people in coping with the situation not only as a queen but also as a grandmother.
The Eulogy for Diana given by Earl Spencer (her brother) was meant to highlight all of Diana’s accomplishments, personality traits and just her life overall. His speech made everybody feel like they knew the princess personally. He assured everyone that all of Diana’s unfinished projects would be continued and that her sons would continue to be raised in the same way. It was a very nice and personal farewell.
The fourth article is from Wikipedia which can be edited by anyone so not all the information may be true. It was basically a summary of the event the investigation and the memorial. It was written almost 10 years after the incident so people already knew about it, but the part about her final resting place may interest people.
Jody Heyman’s essay “We Can Afford to Give Parents a Break” has many patterns that bring it all together. She uses exemplification and compare and contrast the most, she has a lot of facts that let the reader understand the way the United States system works compared to all the other competitors. She also compares the benefits a mother gets and the benefits a father gets, and while the mother would need more days to care for her kids, fathers get more. With all her statistics and facts she makes it clear to the reader what she is trying to say.
